Being There for Him

NOTE: This was taken from the blog of Foundations Health Solutions leader Bob Speelman. Bob works closely and frequently communicates with our Foundations Health facilities. It is so inspiring to see how each care team embodies the vision of our founder and nursing home developer, Brian Colleran, to be "A Culture of Care."

I spent the day at Meadow Grove Transitional Care Center, our 99-bed facility located in Grove City, Ohio. I had the privilege of working with Madison Jones, an absolutely amazing Nursing Assistant.

Madison has been a Nursing Assistant for six years. She has been at Meadow Grove for one year and told me it’s the best place she has ever worked. I asked her why she felt that way. Madison responded. “We are a team here. From the Managers to the front-line staff, we are all here for the residents and everyone is very involved and everyone jumps in to help.”

As I rounded with Madison and we went in and out of resident rooms, Madison greeted her residents like she was family, “Hi Momma,” to this one and, “You not feeling well today, momma?”, to that one. The love and compassion she demonstrated to her residents made your heart fill with pride. I asked Madison how and why she got into becoming a Nursing Assistant. She said, “My Dad.”

Madison proceeded to tell me about how influential her dad has been in her life. He worked hard to provide for their family, coached her softball team, and was always supportive and loving. Madison told me about how she rebelled as a teenager and grew apart from her dad. She told me how when she moved out on her own and needed to start providing and doing things herself she grew to appreciate her dad again and all that he had taught her.

The closeness and admiration returned.

Madison went on to tell me that her dad was diagnosed with Huntington’s Disease. She immediately knew then and there that she wanted to become a Nursing Assistant so she could help take care of her dad like he had taken care of her.

She wanted to be there for him.

Not only is Madison helping to take care of her father, but we are blessed to have her as part of our Meadow Grove care team. Mr. Jones – You raised an amazing daughter, and I am sure your heart is filled with pride at the thought of what she is doing and who she is as a person. God bless you!

“My father didn’t tell me how to live. He lived and let me watch him do it.”
